PROJECTS

Notable recent work, updates incoming

A job from a few weeks back here in Kingsmead Northwich. The homeowner had suffered from a leaking shower tray caused by poor installation. The shower tray had developed a crack as it hadn't been installed correctly, had too much flex, and wasn't adequately supported at the point at which the crack had developed. As a result, the tray had allowed a significant amount of water through and damaged the ceiling below, rendering the whole thing unusable. The customer decided to replace both the tray and the enclosure - opting for a rectangular unit instead of the existing offset quadrant. I helped them to source a suitable model and carried out all work to first remove the old fixtures, rectify the underlying issues that had allowed a crack to develop, and then install the new fixtures. After completing work in the bathroom, I then fitted fresh plasterboard to the damaged ceiling, and skimmed the area with 2 coats of plaster. It's been a while since my last post, plenty of jobs to mention since then. This one was over in Anderton just past the Winnington bridge, returning to a local business to sort out a leak from the pan connector. With jobs like these, it's a case of detaching the entire toilet from each connecting point, bringing it forward and providing a fix. With old toilets like this, you're invariably battling with rusted screws and other nasty obstacles. In this case, I had to saw the floor bolts away to allow access. After eventually moving the toilet and inspecting the pan connection, the cause of the leak was revealed to be a completely severed inner seal. I removed the damaged offset connector, installed a new one, drilled new holes for the floor bolts, fitted plugs, positioned the toilet in place, attached the floor bolts, sealed the edges of the pan and all was good to go ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #leak #toilet #repair #fix #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #anderton #winnington #northwich #cheshire

I was called to an emergency leak in Goostrey yesterday. The homeowner woke up to find water coming down through his hallway ceiling and by the wall lights. He'd noticed some signs of water damage previously, but things had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. I lifted up a section of flooring that seemed to have been cut at an earlier time, and immediately saw the issue. The previous plumber who'd lifted the floorboard when doing work to a pipe run close by had accidentally hammered a nail through an unrelated section of pipe when putting the floorboard back in place. Accidents happen, but instead of rectifying their mistake with a proper fix, they instead decided to remove the nail, cover the hole with mastic, and pretend nothing had happened! It's amazing the 'fix' lasted as long as it did to be perfectly honest, but it was always doomed to eventually fail. The original pipework was imperial sizing, so the fix required a couple of imperial to metric adapting couplers. I also added a couple of safe plates to the joists to prevent a fresh nail going through my fix at a later point ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #leak #burstpipe #repair #fix #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #goostrey #cheshire

Latest cloakroom suite renovation here in Kingsmead. The goal of the refurb - apart from updating the look and feel - was to maximise the available space in a tight understairs area, and to install a suite that best utilised that space. I started by relocating the basin waste pipe behind the skirting, meaning the unsightly and space-wasting boxwork could be removed. With the main reconfiguration in place, I papered the walls, painted the door and skirting, added a tiled splashback, laid new flooring, and installed a short projection toilet and vanity unit to complete the makeover. The vanity unit provides additional storage, while the basin itself is wider and more usable than the wall-hung version it replaced. Transformation complete! ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #bathroom #cloakroom #spacesaving #spacesaver #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #kingsmead #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Geberit systems are really impressive - well-designed, and straightforward to update. I removed an old flush valve that had allowed excess water to pass into the bowl and replaced it with the updated 212 model designed to retrofit all concealed cisterns. Geberit provides IKEA-style visual instructions to guide you through each step of the process, including detailed diagrams of the parts involved. Its all very intuitive and well thought out! It was also my first time inside the Verdin House flat complex, formerly the old art college. Must've driven past well over a thousand times now, so it was nice to finally see inside. ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #geberit #bathroom #toilet #concealedcistern #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #verdinhouse #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Another little job from Thursday up in Winsford. The homeowner's basin waste had corroded so badly it was visibly crumbling into the bottle trap. After removing the waste, the whole thing disintegrated into my hand, leaving the connecting thread completely lodged tightly into the trap connection. I already had the replacement waste ready for the switch, but needed to pop out for a new bottle trap given the state of the old one. I always use a basin mate these days as waste connections always seem to leak down the threads without one. With those three things fitted, everything was back in working order. ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #bathroom #basin #basinwaste #bottletrap #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #winsford #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

A job from yesterday over in Hartford. A toilet with a concealed cistern was no longer flushing. Getting at the inner fixtures is usually the worst part of this job, but at least this one had an access panel above the cistern. Long troubleshooting post incoming... The flush valve had stopped working - now usually with this type of job I'd just whip out the old one, pick up a new one for ยฃ15, and replace it like for like. As I was dealing with a concealed cistern however, getting access to the backnuts etc underneath the flush is basically hell on toast. As the flush valve was a John Dudley, I figured the best solution would be to detach the old one from its cradle and screw in the siphon from an updated model. I even sourced one that comes with an attachment designed to retrofit old flush valves - result!??? Nope! Turns out the JD retrofit attachment won't even retrofit their old valves. So with that solution off the table, and with access to the bottom of the cistern unviable, I set about repairing the existing flush valve. Complete success, problem solved. Flushed the toilet, all good! Except... With the cistern cleared of water, the inlet valve is supposed to kick in with a steady flow of water to top it back up again. What instead followed was a slow trickle as the inlet valve revealed itself to be knackered also. Thankfully the incoming connection had an isolation valve, and most importantly was side access. Phew ๐Ÿฅต In this case, I was able to replace the old valve with a brand-new one, and immediately saw the correct flow of water to refill the cistern. The moral of the story is you have to be adaptable in this job - there will never be any single solution as different factors will block the path. The 'right' way isn't always an option, sometimes you have to find an alternative, and that's what keeps the brain ticking over. ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #bathroom #toilet #concealedcistern #flush #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #plumbingproblemssolved #hartford #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

First job in Goostrey, replacing a broken Geberit concealed cistern. The homeowner contacted me to report a leak behind the back to wall unit. Upon inspection, I spotted that the toilet flush pipe was the culprit, and as the cistern was about 15 years old, we decided to replace it with a brand new model complete with inlet valve, flush and fittings. Space is generally tight with this sort of setup, but I managed to get the old cistern out and the new one in relatively trouble free. To prevent similar damage happening to the new flush pipe (probably caused by movement of the pan) I secured L brackets into place and added a neat bead of silicone around the toilet base. ๐Ÿซก #project #plumbing #geberit #bathroom #toilet #concealedcistern #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #goostrey #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Another thermostatic garden tap fitted this weekend. The water is set at 38 degrees via a thermostatic mixer valve that blends hot and cold feeds, delivering a controlled temperature to the quarter-turn outdoor tap. This installation does not affect the existing garden tap at all - as you'll see in the first picture, the original tap is still in place and can be used to water the plants etc. The thermostatic tap is best used to fill up paddling pools, clean muddy dogs, or wash the car. #project #plumbing #garden #gardendesign #tap #gardentap #outdoortap #paddlingpool #carwash #dogshower #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Kitchen tap replacement from the weekend here in sunny Kingsmead. The tap was constantly running, so it was long overdue for an update. I think the original had been in since the house was built, hence the very dated copper tails soldered up to the water supply without isolation valves. I chopped those tails out and reconfigured the pipework slightly to allow for iso valves. The tap comes with decent-length flexi tails, so that made life easier. Another thing that makes life easier is my Tapex kit from Nerrad tools - an absolute God-send when fastening back nuts in tight spots i.e. under kitchen sinks! The new tap is looking smart, far more modern and a nice bit of extra clearance beneath the neck when using the sink. ๐Ÿ™Œ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #installation #tap #kitchentap #kitchen #northwich #northwichlife #kingsmead #cheshire

Beko dishwasher installation over in Leftwich. Homeowners already had a washing machine up and running in their utility room, which made the job straightforward. Some simple pipework changes allow for two separate connections for the machine's water inlet and waste pipes. Always love the jobs where there's plenty of space to work in. ๐Ÿ™Œ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #installation #dishwasher #beko #northwich #northwichlife #leftwich #cheshire

Just finished an electric shower swap up in Castle. The homeowner's previous two Triton showers had been installed incorrectly and were taking their water supply from the mains. This resulted in both of them breaking and gushing out water. So it was a case of capping off the mains pipe and then getting the new shower - a Triton T80SR pumped model - correctly connected to the water tank feed, wired in and ready to go. After rectifying a slight internal issue with the pump override, all was good and the shower is performing nicely. #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #shower #electricshower #triton #bathroom #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Here it is - anthracite 3-column radiator - an absolute beast and very heavy, but looks fantastic when eventually managing to get it hung in place. After getting it in position, I added copper pipe to replace the old 10mm plastic so Fudge isn't tempted to nibble it, and emptied in a big dose of inhibitor. Re-pressurised the system and gave the rad a whirl even though it's bloody sweltering today ๐Ÿฅต Massive improvement on the previous red radiator in my opinion! #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #radiator #designerradiator #pet #guineapig #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Just fitted a warm garden tap in Kingsmead. The temperature is thermostatically controlled just like a shower valve - it's hidden away beneath the sink, but easy access to control and lock the preferred temperature. In this case, the tap will be used mainly for filling up a children's pool, but it would also be ideal for hosing down muddy dogs, or even for washing the car at a nice comfortable temperature. As you can see from the photos, the new tap doesn't interfere with the existing garden tap at all, it just sits slightly higher than it, so you can still water the plants with the cold supply as normal and use the warm option as and when needed. #project #plumbing #garden #gardendesign #tap #plumber #plumbers #plumberlife #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Little job from last week over in Hartford. Samsung Fridge Freezer needed a water line plumbing in for the filtered and chilled water supply and ice maker. I didn't want to disturb the existing Hep connections, so I disconnected the cold tap's isolating valve and replaced with a compression coupler into a push-fit tee. From there, I added the cold tap back in, and a washing machine valve to feed the fridge. I picked up a fridge line connecting kit as Samsung don't provide much to work with. It came with 15m of tubing and some really smart 8mm push fit connectors complete with collet clips! After feeding the tubing underneath the kitchen cabinets and making the required connection, it was simply a case of attaching the line to the back of the fridge, turning the water on, and hey-presto - chilled and filtered water on demand. Cheers ๐Ÿซ—๐ŸงŠ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #fridge #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Aqualisa Quartz shower pump replacement in Kingsmead. First time working with one of these, but very smart - connects to the shower control via a data cable. When the control button is pressed, the pump receives the request electrically and kicks into gear. The wire itself goes through the riser rail, up into the loft space, and then into the pump. Pretty cool. The previous model lasted about 12 years, but the bearings had gone - hence a new model in bright orange ๐ŸŠ Switchover was straightforward, basically a like-for-like. Existing install had isolating valves in place which always helps. Everything working as expected, and we're on to the next job! ๐Ÿ™Œ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #bathroom #bathroomdesign #shower #pump #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

First job this morning over in Hartford again: a radiator drain down and removal in preparation for an updated anthracite radiator install later in the week. Seems like the previous homeowner's dog had attempted it's own drain down, chomping on the plastic pipework and elbows ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Thankfully it held (somehow), and we'll get it all chopped out and replaced with copper on Friday just in case it comes back to have another go ๐Ÿถ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #radiator #kitchen #kitchendesign #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire #hartford

Today I was at Rocco's home in Kingsmead doing a direct switch of a Watermill Wasp 50 shower pump. How well does Rocco look for ten-years old by the way? I thought he was five! Anyway, after finally getting the gate valve to stop passing, I had the pump replacement up and running with water pressure restored to normal ๐Ÿ™Œ #project #plumbing #plumber #plumberlife #plumbers #pet #dog #shower #pump #bathroom #bathroomdesign #northwich #northwichlife #cheshire

Another busy day over in Hartford fitting an outdoor tap and installing a thermostatic shower valve and riser rail.
